      So in the pharmaceutical industry, after a drug has been discovered it processed onto teams like mine who formulate the drug into a usable product. We try and stabilize and mix the drug so it is safe and effective to the people who will be taking it. We then prepare it for lab testing.

      For us, once we figure out how proteins are changing in disease (e.g. dementia), those proteins are now a possible target for drugs. We then need to screen lots and lots of compounds to see if any of them can modify the target in the way that we want. When we’ve identified possible compounds, we can work with drug companies to help make the compound into a drug. (Dan’s answer goes into more detail about this!)
