I’m not sure I’d change my field. My research interests might change with time, but I think I would stick with biology. My work might take on some aspects of physics and chemistry, but it would primarily be biology because that is what I’ve trained in for the last six years!

Definitely not! I love Biology! Physics is interesting but I couldn’t do a career in it. I like going to planetariums and space museums but that’s about it. A lot of my work involves chemistry anyway, as you have to understand how different chemicals react with each other and how you can use these reactions in your research. My main interest though is understanding how humans work, which is biology.

Ha – when I was in school I thought of these as separate fields. But in reality they are all linked. I do some biology – after all my responsibilities are for safe food – but I also use food chemistry and more recently data science – which is linked to physics.

When I chose my degree I did not understand what biochemistry was – and this was my passion but I didn’t have a name for it.
There are so many areas – some of them new – that the choice today is endless. Would I change – I already have a number of times and no doubt, I will again in the future.

At school I did all three. Now I just work in physics, but a lot of really good research now involves people and skills from many different sciences.

I think my job incorporates aspects of all them, so I don’t think I need to change but maybe if i changed careers I would like to be an astrophysicist so I would change to physics.
