Humans can’t breathe underwater, because we don’t have gills that filter out the dissolved oxygen gas from the water, like fish do. Fish require much less oxygen than humans, and there is much less dissolved oxygen available in the water than there is in the air. Also, our lungs aren’t adapted to take in oxygen from liquid. It’s an interesting question though!

There are scientists in Korea who have built a prototype called “Triton” which is supposed to be like the one in James Bond (the “rebreather”). It’s only a concept at the moment, but the idea is that it acts like a fish gill to extract oxygen from water. The designer, Mr Yeon, thinks that it can one day replace scuba equipment. I guess we will have to wait and see!

That is an amazing question, it is would be very difficult to extract enough oxygen from water to be about to breath underwater as it would require a lot of water to break all the oxygen from the 2 hydrogens. Also to air is composed of many other elements so they would need to be present as well to be able to breath for long periods of time.

And then of course, there is scuba. If you haven’t tried it find a local club – you need basic competence in the water and if you want to qualify a basic understanding of physics to pass the theory test. Bus swimming underwater provides a great way of getting up close to fish and other sea life. I particularly like close encounters with turtles!
