Question: If animals' skin cells can also mutate does this mean that it is more likely that species in hot countries are dying more frequently due to skin cancer?
That’s a good question! Exposure to UV rays from the sun is one of the things that can increase risk of skin cancer. Animals with light skin or having very little hair to cover their light skin are more likely to get sunburned. I would imagine that animals in hot countries, or in places with a lot of sun exposure, have adapted to stay out of the sun and in the shade, and that their hair may protect them from the sun more! For example, hippos tend to live in hot sunny places, but they roll around in mud a lot which helps prevent sun exposure.
