A PhD is a second Univerisity degree which is based on research into a particular topic. You do your own research, but with the help and guidance of more experienced people.
The brightness of a laser can change with time, and for the very sensitive measurements we were trying to do these changes in brightness messed them up. I built a system that kept the brightness steady. I also built a system that controlled the frequency of the laser for the same reasons.
